Style Icons Vol.1 – Daisuke

Our new section, called Style Icons, portrays some of the cream of the crop stylish people in Tokyo. We want to introduce talented fashionistas to the world, and to give our readers an opportunity to discover more of Japan and it’s dashing people! First up is Daisuke, who we met at Pecha Kucha night.

その記念すべき、第１回目は『ペチャクチャナイト』のイベント会場で知り合ったダイスケくんです！

Daisuke is a 21 year old student, majoring in product design at Tama Art University. First time we met him was at Pecha Kucha night in Tokyo where he stood out from the crowd because of his sense of fashion. After exchanging a few words with him he gave us a great first impression – he radiated self-confidence from the inside out.

Since his photo was posted we received numerous positive responses. We came to the conclusion that he would be the perfect candidate to start off our new section.

What do you think is happening in Tokyo’s fashion scene right now?

It is heading more towards unisex fashion. This seasons Comme Des Garcons BLACK label didn’t even separate men’s & women’s wear, it was all bundled up together. Now many fashion designers are even putting out men’s skirts. We never saw that before. I think the trend is going beyond just simple unisex fashion.

Who are your favorite fashion designers?

I love Japanese designers like Rei Kawakubo of “Comme Des Garcons”, Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake. But for every day I like to wear Paul Smith. They all create their own textile design. I love how they are so particular about such details. I also appreciate how their designs are creative and avant-garde!

When it comes to my own product designs, I put importance in creating refined but practical products. I think that is why I really love those designers – I get to experience the avant-garde side of myself through wearing their clothes!

Tell us more about your own design style?

My products are practical, detailed and refined. I appreciate exquisite designs but it has to be combined with practicality and it has to be easy to use for the consumer.

Is there any fashion trend you will never try?

Unisex fashion can be interesting, but I’ll never wear men’s skirts! I think that is going too far. Even though I appreciate avant-garde designs I think men should keep an essence of masculinity and vice versa.

What other interests do you have, besides fashion and design?

I enjoy ironing shirts, polishing shoes, shopping and collecting uniquely shaped or designed bottles, for example perfume bottles.

Watching movies with beautiful cinematography is also something I enjoy. One of my favorite movies is Wong Kar Wai’s “My Blueberry Nights”. Beautiful visuals are more important to me than the story line.

I also enjoy Disney movies, particularly “Wall-E”. The fact that the main character had no lines was unconventional and interesting.

Music is another interest of mine. One of my favorite artists is Yuki – a Japanese pop singer-songwriter. She is best known as the lead vocalist for Judy and Mary. I generally prefer indie music rather than mainstream. Currently, I’ve also been listening a lot to Colbie Caillat’s “Bubby” and Yael Naim’s “New Soul”.

What do you hope for the future of fashion and design?

“Fast fashion” and “High Fashion” is currently being bipolarized. If this trend continues, I believe it will elevate the significance of high fashion brands. The importance of style and fashion in today’s society is underrated.

Ideally I would like the fast fashion buyers to realize the beauty of high fashion brands because of the attention to detail, quality of textile design and overall image that they project to the world. I think an important aspect of fashion is its relationship to the society at large.

I hope that one day the whole society will appreciate more of the “design” aspect rather than just the price, this goes for fashion as well as my own field, product design. Hopefully, the society will have more refined artistic eyes in the future.

ダイスケくんは多摩美術大学でプロダクトデザインを専攻している２１歳の大学生です。彼の持つ独特のファッションセンスは大勢の中にいても一際目立ち、少し会話をしただけでも中から自信が滲み出ているのが感じられて、とても好印象を私たちに残しました。ダイスケくんの写真をサイトにアップしたとき、彼のセンスの評判が非常に良かったので、この新しい企画『スタイル アイコンズ』の初回はダイスケくんが一番適していると確信しました。

今の東京のファッション トレンドに何が起こってると思いますか？

時代はユニセックスファッションの方向性にどんどん傾いてる気がします。今年のコムデギャルソンのブラックレーベルはメンズとレディースの店舗も分かれてなかった。以前までは、ユニセックスとは男女両方が同じ洋服を着るという定義だったけど、今ではメンズ用のスカートも普通に売られるようになり、ユニセックスという概念を超越した時代に入ってきていると思う。

特に好きなファッション デザイナーはいますか？

日本のデザイナーが基本的に好きです。川久保玲さん、山本耀司さん、三宅一生さんが特に大好きです！彼らの自社で生地から作るこだわりを持っているところや、アバンギャルドでユニークなデザインの発想力が最高に素敵だと思ってます。でも普段着にはポールスミスを着ることが多いです。

自分の作品創りのときは、精密さや機能性を重要視しているので、 ファッションでは自由な発想をもってるデザイナーを好む傾向にあるのだと思います。そういう発想力やスケールの大きさの刺激を受けて、その部分をファッションで表現して満たされることが、自分の作品創りにも良い影響を与えてると感じています。

自身のデザインスタイルのこだわりや心掛けはありますか？

精緻感溢れるデザインを心掛けるようにしています。細かなところまで作り込まれてる美しさを保ちながらも、機能性や快適性を重視した消費者が安心して使いやすい商品を創りたいと思っています。

自分が絶対に試したくないトレンドはありますか？

メンズ スカートです。あれは絶対に履きたくない。基本的にユニセックスな洋服は好きだけど、最低限の男らしさや女らしさは残しておいたほうが良いと思う。境界線はある程度ないと秩序がなくなり、最終的に男女がお互いに惹かれ合わなくなってしまう様な気がする。

デザイン以外の趣味や興味は他にありますか？

シャツのアイロンがけ、靴磨き、ショッピング、素敵な形をした容器やボトルを集めるのが好きです。
例えば香水のボトルとか、、。

音楽を聴くのが好きですね。 特にYUKI が好きです。彼女はポップス系のシンガーソングライターで、JUDY & MARYのリードボーカリストでもありました。いわゆるメジャーな音楽よりも、インディーズ系の音楽のほうが好きです。他には、コルビーカイラットの『バブリー』と ヤエル ナイムの『ニューソウル』を好んで聴いてます。

他には映画を観たりします。印象に一番残ってるのはウォン カーワイの『マイ ブルーベリー ナイツ』です。映像がとても綺麗なのが印象的でした。映画のストーリー自体よりも映像の美しさに惹かれる傾向があります。他には、ディズニー映画が大好きで、特に気に入ってるのが『WALL-E』です。映画の主人公がロボットなのですが、台詞が殆ど無いのがとても斬新なアイディアだと思いました！

未来のファッションやデザイン界にどうあって欲しいと望みますか？

今、 ファストファッションとハイブランドの２極化が進んでいると思います。それが進むことによってますますハイブランドの服の価値が上がっていき、ファスト ファッションの手頃な価格を気に入って買っている人も、いつかハイブランドの生地、形、細部の作り込みの良さに気づくときが来るような気がします。そして デザインやクォリティーの良さ、良いものを長く着たり、長く使う大切さを社会全般がもっと目を向けてくれる 日が来る事ことを望みます。その結果、自分の専門分野であるプロダクトデザインを含め、価格が高いからといって美しいものが嫌厭されることのない、洗練さ れた文化のある社会になることを望みます。
